Leissler studierte von 1958 bis 1960 an der Werkkunstschule Hannover und von 1962 bis 1965 an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Nürnberg. Er war Mitglied des Deutschen Künstlerbundes und erhielt den Deutschen Rompreis.
