A Rare Silver Mezuzah Case. Handcrafted by Jewish Silversmith Felix Horowitz. Frankfurt am Main, circa 1900.

Length: 8 cm. Hallmarked.

A very rare and unusual hand-made silver Mezuzah case.

The wonderful Mezuzah case shows the Tablets of the Law, set before a fruit-laden tree, inscribed in Hebrew with the words "The Torah is the Tree of Life".

Felix Horowitz was considered one of the most important Jewish silversmiths of his time in Germany. His well-reputed workshop also employed his brother, Leo, who was a famous sculptor and artist in his own right. Pieces from the Horowitz Brothers' oeuvre, especially that of Felix, are displayed in museums throughout the world, in particular the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt am Main. Their work was considered highly original for its successful melding of modern aesthetics and traditional elements of Jewish ceremonial art, both for the synagogue and the home.

A lovely, original, and rare piece, made by a Jewish silversmith.
